Play
Start in a tab. Stay for a client.
The fastest first session is the browser — no installation, nothing to configure. When you want maps, stats, and customization, move to Mudlet. Any MUD client works.
Play in browser — recommended first session
The browser client opens on Grapevine in a new tab and connects you straight to the game. Create a character, and the game walks you through your first room.
Your first five minutes
Every session is read, type, read. Here is the shape of it — try the three commands below.
Illustrative preview — drafted for the migration, pending review against a live game room.
look
The lamps of Ashenport bend in a salt wind. A courier argues with the innkeeper beneath a map scored by old Swiftpath routes.
Exits: north — Pilgrim's Steps; east — The Pipe and Ivories.

north
You climb the Pilgrim's Steps. Rain has worn the prayer-marks smooth, and the harbor lanterns swing far below.
Exits: south — the taproom; up — the shrine landing.
ask innkeeper about courier
The innkeeper wipes a glass and nods toward the corner. "Swiftpath riders don't argue unless a road is closed. Buy him a drink and ask about the pass yourself."

Set up Mudlet
Mudlet is a free, cross-platform MUD client with mapping, triggers, and scripting. Recommended once you know you're staying a while.
- Download Mudlet from mudlet.org (Windows, macOS, Linux).
-
Create a new profile with host
luminarimud.comand port4100. - Connect and create your character. Ask about the Luminari GUI package in-game or on Discord for maps and stat displays.
Mudlet setup last verified 22 July 2026.
Use your own client
Any MUD or telnet client connects directly. No account is created outside the game.
luminarimud.com : 4100
If the connection fails
- Check the port: the game listens on
4100, not 23. - Some office and school networks block outbound telnet ports entirely.
- Still stuck? Ask in the community — include your client name and the error text.
The first-hour guide
After character creation, spend your first hour learning the loop, not optimizing a build.
- Read the room.
lookis always safe. Exits are listed at the end of every room description. - Move. Type an exit direction —
north, east,up— to walk the world. - Ask for help.
helpopens the in-game manual; the newbie channel is staffed by real players. - Take one fight, one purchase, one conversation. Combat, the economy, and roleplay are the three loops everything else builds on.
- Then look at the rules. When a roll surprises you, the rules index explains what the room just did.
This guide is being reviewed against the current game; command examples follow standard MUD conventions.
